Flocculants refer to a process in which individual particles of a suspension lead to the formation of aggregates. The colloids come out of suspension in the form of flakes or floc by the addition of a clarifying agent. It also describes the activities of polymeric materials that form bridges amongst the particles. Different ionic, anionic, and cationic polymers are present in flocculants. Flocculants help in increasing the efficiency of clarification, filtration, and centrifugation operations. It adsorbs particles or causes destabilization by bridging or charge neutralization.
